Ipratropium oral inhalation solution is used to prevent wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and coughing in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; a group of diseases that affect the lungs and airways) such as chronic bronchitis (swelling of the air passages that lead to the lungs) and emphysema. It is available by prescription only and is in the form of a nebulizer solution. The medication works by binding to specific receptors in the airway to relax the muscle and allow more air into and out of the lungs. Ipratropium is in a class of medications called bronchodilators.
Ipratropium is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of asthma.
Possible side effects of the medication include upper respiratory infections, difficulty breathing, and headaches.
